You aren’t expected to wait a very long time for help, and everyone is treated on an individual basis.
It is important that you are here of your own accord for this therapy to be effective.
it is also important to me that you are listened to and that I hear about your circumstances.
CBT is a learning therapy, involving learning by reading and learning by doing.
If anything might get in the way of this, we’d need to discuss how to problem-solve it.
Using this approach tends to have the most impact on resolving the issues.
1. HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
This varies and largely depends upon how you feel it is going as well as your progress. Although there is no fixed number of sessions, CBT is commonly considered to be a shorter term form of therapy,
After a few sessions there would be a review and we would talk about what you want to achieve going forward. Just so you know, I would never tell you to stay in therapy or to leave it: the choice will always be yours.
2. WILL YOU TELL ME WHAT TO DO?
Not at all: my role is to work together with you (as a team) so we both understand what you are dealing with and then I can help you choose the best course of action. If the therapies I offer are not best suited to you, I will do my best to signpost you elsewhere for services that might give you the help you need.
3. CBT AND ACCEPTANCE COMMITMENT THERAPY ( ACT) & COMPASSION FOCUSED THERAPY (CFT) AND HOW THESE DIFFER FROM COUNSELLING:
CBT helps you develop tools and strategies for what the problem is and suggests how you get out of your situation.
Counselling will (generally speaking) discuss and reflect upon the reasons why you got into the situation.
ACT is a mindfulness therapy that helps you accept the changes that happen in life, so moving you towards living a more meaningful life.
CFT is a therapeutic approach that aims to help those who struggle with shame and self-criticism, often resulting from early experiences of abuse or neglect.
